Holocaust Representations in History : An Introduction

Description

Holocaust Representations in History is an introduction to critical questions and debates surrounding the depiction, chronicling and memorialization of the Holocaust through the historical analysis of some of the most provocative and significant works of Holocaust representation. In a series of chronologically presented case studies, the book introduces the major themes and issues of Holocaust representation across a variety of media and genres, including film, drama, literature, photography, visual art, television, graphic novels, and memorials. The case studies presented not only include well-known, commercially successful, and canonical works about the Holocaust, such as the film Shoah and Elie Wiesel's memoir Night, but also controversial examples that have drawn accusations of profaning the memory of the genocide. Each work's specific historical and cultural significance is then discussed to provide further insight into the impact of one of the most devastating events of the 20th century and the continued relevance of its memory. Complete with illustrations, a bibliography and suggestions for further reading, key terms and discussion questions, this is an important book for any student keen to know more about the Holocaust and its impact.

Gerard Prunier: Africa's World War : Congo, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Making of a Continental Catastrophe

Africa's World War : Congo, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Making of a Continental Catastrophe

Description

The Rwandan genocide sparked a horrific bloodbath that swept across sub-Saharan Africa, ultimately leading to the deaths of some four million people. In this extraordinary history of the recent wars in Central Africa, Gerard Prunier offers a gripping account of how one grisly episode laid the groundwork for a sweeping and disastrous upheaval. Prunier vividly describes the grisly aftermath of the Rwandan genocide, when some two million refugees--a third of Rwanda's population--fled to exile in Zaire in 1996. The new Rwandan regime then crossed into Zaire and attacked the refugees, slaughtering upwards of 400,000 people. The Rwandan forces then turned on Zaire's despotic President Mobutu and, with the help of a number of allied African countries, overthrew him. But as Prunier shows, the collapse of the Mobutu regime and the ascension of the corrupt and erratic Laurent-Desire Kabila created a power vacuum that drew Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe, Sudan, and other African nations into an extended and chaotic war. The heart of the book documents how the whole core of the African continent became engulfed in an intractible and bloody conflict after 1998, a devastating war that only wound down following the assassination of Kabila in 2001. Prunier not only captures all this in his riveting narrative, but he also indicts the international community for its utter lack of interest in what was then the largest conflict in the world. Praise for the hardcover: "The most ambitious of several remarkable new books that reexamine the extraordinary tragedy of Congo and Central Africa since the Rwandan genocide of 1994."--New York Review of Books "One of the first books to lay bare the complex dynamic between Rwanda and Congo that has been driving this disaster."--Jeffrey Gettleman, New York Times Book Review "Lucid, meticulously researched and incisive, Prunier's will likely become the standard account of this under-reported tragedy."--Publishers Weekly

India Knight: Mutton

Mutton

Description

The fourth novel from India Knight is a hilarious, heartfelt exploration of women's relationship with their looks. What's a woman to do when she wakes up one morning and finds an enormous freak-wrinkle bisecting her forehead? When she walks past the buildings site and nothing happens? When she catches the eye of a nice young man and is rewarded with a kind, patient, for-granny smile? Clara Hutt, 46, feels herself to be in her absolute prime. She is chipper. Her sap is rising mightily, as it happens. But then her friend Gaby comes back from California and moves in with her. Gaby is no stranger to Los Angeles' more invasive cosmetic procedures. She may be pushing 50 but she looks 35. And Clara wonders: should she follow suit? A little Botox, a little filler, a little nip, a little tuck ...but where to stop? And is nostril-waxing ever a good idea? "Had me choking with laughter...Knight has pulled off a clever trick here. With humour and wit, she's addressed the serious subject of how to swallow the bitter pill of ageing not necessarily gracefully". ("Evening Standard"). Praise for India Knight: "Knight is brilliant on comic details and spot-on about relationships". ("The Times"). "Tender, tough, schmaltzy, witty and heart-warming all at once. Knight has a great comic touch". ("Metro"). "A superb ear for dialogue ...wonderfully comic". ("Evening Standard"). India Knight is the author of three previous novels: "My Life on a Plate", "Don't You Want Me" and "Comfort and Joy". Her non-fiction books include "The Shops", the bestselling diet book Neris and India's "Idiot-Proof Diet", the accompanying bestselling cookbook Neris and India's "Idiot-Proof Diet Cookbook" and "The Thrift Book". India is a columnist for the "Sunday Times" and lives in London with her three children.

Creators on Creating: A New Consciousness Reader

Description

Within the pages of Creators on Creating lies an impressively diverse collection of writings by world-famous artists, musicians, writers, scientists, and filmmakers who have provided us with joy, illumination, and profundity through their craft. In this anthology we learn how they foster and harness the power behind their awesome gift, and we comprehend the responsibility that accompanies it. Richard Feynman and Annie Dillard relate how they opened their minds to new insights, paths, and trajectories, and Federico Fellini and Henry Miller shed light on the passion that drove their creativity. Mary Shelley and Michel Foucault describe how they used their imagination to challenge existing assumptions, customs, and orders; Maya Angelou, Brian Eno, and Tony Kushner tell of the wisdom they garnered by working within a creative ecology of people, ideas, and experiences; Leonardo da Vinci and Frank Zappa reveal how they balanced freedom and exploration with hard work and mastery of their craft; and Laurence Olivier and Karen Finley give us the "courage to go naked." Inspirational and insightful, practical and idealistic, this collection is an invitation to engage some of the world's most artistic and ingenious people in a rewarding dialogue.

AlterKnits Felt: Imaginative Projects for Knitting and Felting

Description

There's something magical about felting knits: You start with a piece of fabric that looks and feels a certain way and, by exposing it to water and agitation, finish with one that looks and feels completely different. This fascinating transformation is what led author Leigh Radford to begin felting years ago, and has kept her intrigued by the process ever since. Now, in "AlterKnits Felt," Radford pushes the boundaries of traditional felting, as she did with traditional knitting in her earlier book, "AlterKnits." Through 30 colorful, vibrant projects, she shows readers how to knit and then felt their own handiwork, as well as how to create gorgeous felted objects from recycled knits and unspun fiber. An introductory chapter on felting basics explains everything you need to know to make the fabulous clothes, accessories, and home decor that follow. The projects range from a quick and easy circle coin purse, to a shibori bag, to a reverse-applique rug, each unusual in its own way, distinguished by a special surface texture, an innovative mix of techniques, or a quirky combination of yarns. "AlterKnits Felt" provides every crafter with the tools to explore--and expand--the art of felting.

Is it a sequel to my autobiography If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor? Sadly, no, which made it much harder to write. According to my publisher, I haven't "done" enough since 2001 to warrant another memoir. Ethics and Law for the Health Professions is a cross-disciplinary medico-legal book whose previous editions have been widely used by students, teachers and practitioners in the health professions and in law. This new 4th edition has been extensively revised and updated to take account of developments in law, biomedical science, healthcare delivery and bioethics. Sections dealing with critical reasoning, problem solving, professionalism, negligence, standards of care, public health and the emerging biosciences have been considerably expanded and entirely new chapters have been added dealing with sexuality, culture, rural health, evidence and global health. As AlterKnits Felt: Imaginative Projects for Knitting and Felting free pdf with previous editions, the 4th edition of Ethics and Law for the Health Professions focuses on issues that are relevant both to clinicians and to health-policy-makers. It combines insights from philosophy, bioethics and the health social sciences, biomedical research data and case law. Importantly, this book recognises that health professionals must understand both the ethical and legal implications of their practice but is careful to distinguish between the two.

Dorothy L Sayers: Busman's Honeymoon

Busman's Honeymoon

Description

Murder is hardly the best way for Lord Peter and his bride, the famous mystery writer Harriet Vane, to start their honeymoon. It all begins when the former owner of their newly acquired estate is found quite nastily dead in the cellar. All too quickly, what Lord Peter had hoped would be a very private and romantic stay in the country has turned into a most baffling case, with a misspelled "notise" to the milkman at its center and a dead man who's been discovered in a most intriguing condition: with not a spot of blood on his smashed skull and not a penny less than six hundred pounds in his pocket.

For the first time ever YouTube personality Miranda Sings is sharing her life lessons and tutorials on paper, full of her own illustrations and photos. In it you'll find Miranda's instructions on all you need to know in life, from how to get a boyfriend (wear all black and carry a fishing net) to performing magic tricks (magic is lying). This is a self-declared lifesaving book, and if you don't like it..., well as Miranda would say...'Haters, back off!' The Riviera Set is the story of the group of people who lived, partied, bed-hopped and politicked at the Chateau de l'Horizon near Cannes, over the course of forty years from the time when Coco Chanel made southern French tans fashionable in the twenties to the death of the playboy Prince Aly Khan in 1960. At the heart of this was the amazing Maxine Elliott, the daughter of a fisherman from Connecticut, who built the beautiful art deco Chateau and brought together the likes of Noel Coward, the Aga Khan, the Windsors and two very saucy courtesans, Doris Castlerosse and Daisy Fellowes, who set out to be dangerous Busman's Honeymoon free download pdf distractions to Winston Churchill as he worked on his journalism and biographies during his 'wilderness years' in the thirties. After the War the story continued as the Chateau changed hands and Prince Aly Khan used it to entertain the Hollywood set, as well as launch his seduction of and eventual marriage to Rita Hayworth. Mary Lovell tells her story of high society behaviour with tremendous brio and relish, and this book has all the charm and fascination of her bestselling The Mitford Girls and The Churchills.

The Winter of Our Discontent

Description

The final novel of one of America s most beloved writers a tale of degeneration, corruption, and spiritual crisis In awarding John Steinbeck the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Nobel committee stated that with "The Winter of Our Discontent," he had resumed his position as an independent expounder of the truth, with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American. Ethan Allen Hawley, the protagonist of Steinbeck s last novel, works as a clerk in a grocery store that his family once owned. With Ethan no longer a member of Long Island s aristocratic class, his wife is restless, and his teenage children are hungry for the tantalizing material comforts he cannot provide. Then one day, in a moment of moral crisis, Ethan decides to take a holiday from his own scrupulous standards.Set in Steinbeck s contemporary 1960 America, the novel explores the tenuous line between private and public honesty, and today ranks alongside his most acclaimed works of penetrating insight into the American condition. This Penguin Classics edition features an introduction and notes by leading Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators."

1081. And so the bloody battle for the crown of the Holy Roman Empire begins. Within the city of Constantinople itself, three venal factions will go to any lengths - will, it seems, kill any who might stand in their way - to seize the throne. And outside the city's walls, twin powers threaten a siege that will crush the once-mighty empire forever. To the west, the voracious forces of the most feared Norman warlord are gathering. While in the east, the Turkish hordes are massing - theirs is a lust for slaughter. And in the midst of this maelstrom of brutality and betrayal, Hereward and his English spear-brothers prepare to make what could be their final stand...

Bethany the Ballet Fairy: Book 1: The Dance Fairies

Description

Jack Frost's naughty goblins have stolen the Dance Fairies' magic ribbons and are hiding in the human world. Everywhere dance is being ruined! Rachel and Kirsty must help Bethany but the goblins' new powers won't make it easy...

Wayne Shelton is ready to proceed with the mission and spring his quarry from a Khalak prison. There is Bethany the Ballet Fairy: Book 1: The Dance Fairies download ebook pdf a small concern over Madrier, the Frenchman who talked his way onto the team - only to abandon them after he was revealed to be the son of a Khalak dissident - A job's a job, though, and Shelton gave his word to his employer. But what if there are other separate, secret interests among the little band that could jeopardize everything? * You are perceived as generous to a fault, producing surprise and delight. When Stephanie Staal first read The Feminine Mystique in college, she found it "a mildly interesting relic from another era." But more than a decade later, as a married stay-at-home mom in the suburbs, Staal rediscovered Betty Friedan's classic work--and was surprised how much she identified with the laments and misgivings of 1950s housewives. She set out on a quest: to reenroll at Barnard and re-read the great books she had first encountered as an undergrad. From the banishment of Eve to Judith Butler's Gender Trouble, Staal explores the significance of each of these classic tales by and of women, highlighting the relevance these ideas still have today. This process leads Staal to find the self she thought she had lost--curious and ambitious, zany and critical--and inspires new understandings of her relationships with her husband, her mother, and her daughter.
